Tom Wessells
artist + woodworker
ABOUT
My name is Tom Wessells and I am a woodworker. I grew up in Newport News VA watching my father make furniture while my mother painted. You might say art was in my DNA. In the late 1960s I studied furniture design at Virginia Commonwealth University VCU under Joe Distefano and Alphonse Mattia. I was fortunate to attend workshops with James Krenov and Wendell Castle. And I picked up some pearls of wisdom from George Nakashima one afternoon while touring his New Hope Compound.
Like many new designers, some of my early work in the 1970s clearly paid homage to these luminaries. As an ever evolving artist I am especially drawn to work that is not so obvious in its origins. Which could also describe my approach to furniture design. Over the years I have drawn from images of fine art, psychology, mythology, natural forms and industrial design. But it is the revolutionary idea of natural forms being structural that intrigues me the most and has probably had the single greatest impact on my personal style.
